Ambassador programme · Intake closed

You do not work for us. You place cans.

We do not advertise. We leave cans. The ambassador programme is how the cans reach the places they are photographed in, and how the photographs come back to us. There are four tiers, eleven rules, and one Host.

Applications are closed. They closed after Drop 004 and have not reopened. There is no reopening date, we will not announce one, and every control on this page is inert. You are welcome to read the programme in full. Nothing below accepts input.

Good Beans. Brighter Days.

Nine cans of Sanjay Beans hanging on twine from a tree branch beside the Cedar Swamp Trail boardwalk.
The programme

What an ambassador is

An ambassador is a person who has agreed to carry a can somewhere beautiful and leave it there. That is the whole arrangement. It has been the whole arrangement since the first drop, and it has never required a contract, a brief, a discount code, or a meeting.

You are not paid

No fee, no commission, no revenue share, no gifting stipend. Sanjay Beans has spent $0 on advertising and the programme is the reason that figure holds.

You receive cans

Cans arrive in a padded box with jute twine and a numbered placement card. The quantity depends on your tier. The variety depends on what came back from the last drop.

You place cans

A placement is a can, a site, a photograph, and a retrieval. All four, in that order, within thirty days. A can left behind is not a placement. It is litter, and we do not call it anything else.

You photograph cans
you did not place

This is the part people find difficult. Most of the photographs we receive are of cans nobody on the roster placed. We file them. We do not explain them.

What the programme is not

Ambassadors are not employees, contractors, agents, or spokespeople. They cannot speak for the company, accept deliveries on its behalf, or describe the location of a trail. They are not given sales targets, because there is nothing to sell: there are 0 cans currently in stock and 11,482 people on the waitlist for the next ones.

Ambassadors are also not asked to be enthusiastic. The beans are navy beans, brown sugar and a little smoke, and they are genuinely good. We have found that people say so without being prompted.

Roster conditions

  • Placements are logged by card number, never by coordinates.
  • One site per ambassador per month. The month is calendar, not rolling.
  • Retrieval within 30 days, without exception and without reminder.
  • No geotags. No trail maps. No hints in captions.
  • Tiers do not expire. Neither does the roster.
Four tiers

Finder, Placer, Guide, Host

You do not choose a tier. A tier is noticed. All four are currently closed to applications, which is a different thing from being full — three are closed, and one is full.

Tier 1 · Entry Closed to applications

Finder

You photographed a can you did not place. That is the entire qualification, and it cannot be arranged in advance. Most Finders are out walking and were not thinking about beans.

Requirements

  • One photograph of a can you did not place.
  • The wordmark readable. The horizon level.
  • No caption claiming you put it there.

You receive

  • A reply, eventually, from a person.
  • Your handle on the wall, if you want it there.
  • No cans. Finders do not receive cans.

Status: Closed to applications. Finder is conferred, not granted — if you have found a can, you already are one.

Tier 2 · Placing Closed to applications

Placer

You have left cans. Requires two verified placements, each with a site photograph, a card number, and a retrieval photograph filed within thirty days. The second one is where most people stop.

Requirements

  • Two verified placements, logged in order.
  • Both retrievals photographed and confirmed.
  • Agreement to the eleven rules below, in writing.

You receive

  • Two cans a month while stock exists.
  • Jute twine, pre-cut, and numbered placement cards.
  • A cloth bag that is slightly too small on purpose.

Status: Closed to applications. The Placer roster was sized to Drop 004 and has not been resized.

Tier 3 · Maintenance Closed · invitation only

Guide

You maintain a trail. Invitation only, and the invitation arrives printed on the inside of a label. Guides are the only ambassadors permitted to place more than one can in a line, and the only ones who know why that is permitted.

Requirements

  • Invitation. There is no second route in.
  • Six months as a Placer with no unretrieved cans.
  • Ability to walk the same four miles every eight days.

You receive

  • Six cans a month, variety chosen for you.
  • A map, hand-drawn, which may not be copied or photographed.
  • Cedar, for the smoking, in a quantity we do not publish.

Status: Closed. Guides are invited. The current number of Guides is not disclosed, and the Guides do not know it either.

Tier 4 · Hospitality Filled — one position

Host

There is exactly one Host. The position is filled. It has been filled since before the programme existed, it is not rotated, and it is not reviewed. The Host does not place cans. The Host receives people.

Requirements

  • An island.
  • A standing supply of beans for every meal.
  • A checkout policy.

You receive

  • Guests, arriving by Bean express.
  • The ceremonial cans, unopened, in the quantity required.
  • The horizon, which the Host looks toward when asked about dinner.

Status: Filled. There is one Host, the position is not vacant, and there is no waiting list for it. Please do not apply to be the Host.

Placement standard · Revision 11

How to place a can

These rules are not style guidance. They are the conditions under which a can may be left outdoors by a person acting on behalf of Sanjay Beans, and they are the conditions under which that can comes home again. Read all eleven before you leave the house.

  1. Choose a site you are willing to return to. You will be returning to it. Site selection is the only part of a placement that cannot be corrected later, so choose somewhere you can reach twice: once with the can, once without it.
  2. Place for the light, not for the view. Morning light across the label, never behind it. The wordmark must be legible to someone standing on the path at eye height, without crouching and without rotating a phone. If the light is wrong, the site is wrong until tomorrow.
  3. One can per site. Never place a can where a can has been placed. Not the same branch, not the same rock, not the same mile marker — not even in a different season. Sites are used once. We keep a record of every site that has been used, and we do not share the record, which means you must trust us about it.
  4. Twine only. Natural jute, pre-cut, one wrap around the branch and a single bow that a child could untie. No wire, no tape, no nails, no screws, no adhesive of any kind. Wire injures the tree. Tape does not survive rain and therefore does not come home.
  5. Nothing may block a trail. Keep the can at least an arm's length off the path, above knee height where dogs run, and clear of any boardwalk, handrail, bench, sign, gate, or culvert. If a person has to step around your placement, your placement is a hazard and you have failed the standard.
  6. Respect the ground you are standing on. No designated wilderness, no private land, no protected habitat, no water, no cemeteries, and nothing within sight of a parking lot. The last one is aesthetic. The others are not.
  7. Leave no trace. No cairns, no arrows, no scratched bark, no flagging tape, no chalk. You do not improve a site before placing in it. The can is the only thing you leave behind, and the can is temporary.
  8. Every can is retrieved within 30 days. This is the rule the programme exists to enforce. If you place a can, you own its removal: you go back, you untie the twine, you carry out the can and the twine and anything that has gathered around them, and you recycle the steel. If you cannot be certain of returning inside thirty days, you do not place the can. Litter is litter. A can left in a beautiful place forever is not marketing — it is rubbish with a logo on it, and it ends your participation in the programme the first time it happens.
  9. Photograph the site twice. Once with the can, once after the can is gone and from the same standing position. A placement is not verified by the first photograph. It is verified by the second.
  10. Tell no one where it is. No geotags, no coordinates, no trail names, no "you'll know it when you see the third bridge". The entire value of a placed can is that it was found rather than visited.
  11. If you find a can you did not place: photograph it. Do not move it. Do not open it. Do not take it with you, and do not retie it if the bow has slipped. Then — and this matters — do not follow it. A single can is a statement. Four cans in a line are a trail, trails are maintained by Guides, and you are not a Guide. Note the bearing, turn around, and send us the photograph.

On retrieval, plainly: Sanjay Beans has recovered every can it has released, with 47 exceptions. All 47 are Cedar Swamp Reserve, from a run of 200, and they remain unaccounted for. We would like them back. The 30-day rule exists because of them, and we enforce it because leaving steel in a swamp is not a brand aesthetic.

What counts as a verified placement

Four items, filed in order, under one card number. A placement missing any of the four is logged as incomplete and does not count toward a tier, no matter how good the photograph is.

  1. The card number, written on the card, in pen.
  2. The site photograph, with the can and the level horizon.
  3. The retrieval photograph, same position, no can.
  4. The date of retrieval, inside thirty days of the date of placement.

Not placements

  • A can on your kitchen table, however good the light.
  • A can held by a person. The can is the subject.
  • A can in a location you will not revisit.
  • A can at a site that has already been used.
  • A can you found. That is a finding, and it has its own form.
  • A can you followed.

Eight handles. Six placements. One of the photographs above is of a can that nobody on this list put there, and we have not said which.

“About a mile in I found a can of beans hanging from a tree. Another 200 yards later, another can. By the fourth can I realized they were forming a trail. I did not follow it.” A Local Guide · Level 3 — Cedar Swamp, Westborough, MA

This is the correct response, and it is rule eleven. We have never asked for a better review and we have never received one.

Apply to the programme

The form is printed here for completeness. It is not connected to anything, it has never been connected to anything, and it will not send. You may still fill it in. People do.

This form is closed and inert. Nothing you type is stored, transmitted, or read. There is no submission endpoint. The button below is labelled with its state as well as styled with it.

Answer honestly. The only wrong answer to the last part is yes.

Applications are closed and this form does not submit. Sanjay Beans is a work of fiction; nothing on this site is for sale and no information is collected.

Why applications are closed

Why did you close the programme?

The programme is sized to the number of cans, and there are 0 cans currently in stock. Drop 004 sold out in 41 seconds, which told us the roster was already larger than the supply. We stopped taking applications rather than take applications we could not fill.

When will applications reopen?

There is no date. Sold out is not a strategy; it keeps happening. If intake reopens it will not be announced here, on the waitlist, or anywhere else. Five drops have happened and all five sold out.

I found a can. Am I a Finder?

Yes. Finder is conferred by the event, not by the form, so there is nothing for you to apply to. Photograph the can, do not move it, do not open it, and do not follow it. If you would like your handle on the wall, say so in the photograph's caption and nowhere else.

Can I place a can I bought myself?

No can has been available to buy since Drop 005. If you are holding a can, it was either placed or it was ceremonial. A placed can belongs to the placement that left it and must be left alone. A ceremonial can has no pull tab and is not intended to be opened.

Do ambassadors get paid?

No. Ambassadors receive cans, twine, and placement cards. We have spent $0 on advertising since the company started and we intend to keep that number where it is. Nobody has asked to be paid, which we take as a statement about the beans.

Is the Host position genuinely filled?

Yes. There is one Host. He is on the island, he is attentive, and every meal is beans. The position is not vacant, not rotating, and not under review, and there is no waiting list for it. Please do not apply to be the Host, and please do not visit the island to ask about the checkout policy.

Canned in Massachusetts. Found everywhere else.

Good Beans. Brighter Days.

A can is a statement. Please do not follow the cans.
